Fashion | NYFW Trend Report

1. Following Suit
Tailoring, tailoring, tailoring. So good, so sharp. Marissa Webb brought it in nicely for the opening of NYFW, with a palette of scarlet, rose pink, white, charcoal and black. Breaths of lace or chiffon gave a contemporary edge to her work, with a hint of leather here and there.

Marc Jacobs hit the nail on the head with punchy femininity, rounded collars and clashing prints, whilst Hugo Boss was a little more contemporary and considered with classic lengths and styles. Oscar de la Renta had a noteworthy mention in this category too; a few looks that were beautifully ladylike with superb tailoring.

A few highlights if you prefer a trouser, too - from sportswear inspired at Ralph Lauren to oriental luxury from The Row and skinny suits at Hugo Boss.

2. So 70s Still
Yep, still here, and for those of us who don't like it much it's not great news. If you love it, hang on to your AW14/SS15 purchases because it is definitely sticking around. Personally, I love big prints, floppy hats and shearling coats, because they're easy pieces to throw on.

Anyway, new season takes on 70s aren't reinventing the wheel as such, but there's a few key things to highlight from NYFW. Updates for AW15? Fur, a greater emphasis on ethnic prints and the balancing of silhouettes. Flares and flowy skirts require a little more attention to detail so you don't look like a bag lady (too much material drowneth the woman) or the wrong end of vintage. Thought required.

Key players for the trend? BCBG Max Azria was a personal favourite. Anna Sui's new hippy chick was a game changer too - great mix of textures, colours and shapes, with fur everywhere and a rich colour palette. Tory Burch was a slinky star in the making, with a fabulous mix of fabrics and attention to detail. Karen Walker gets a special mention for purity of vision; total timewarp, in a good way. Derek Lam is worth a look for 'how to wear the flare' inspiration. I could go on. 70s is still around y'all.

3. Fur Good and Keep it Cosy
Worn best with a 70s printed floaty dress and knee high boots, fur seems to be a huge trend sticking around (great news for me, I love a bit of faux fur action). From huge coats and trims on apparel to stoles and accessories, this is one to hang on to. And wrap up in. Which leads us to...

Shut the front door - we have a trend that actually makes full sense for Autumn/Winter! So many knits. So much wool. Muted tonal fluffiness. Oh my gosh. As seen (and done oh-so-beautifully) at Ralph Lauren, A Detacher and Prabal Gurung.

4. New York Sparkle
It wouldn't be New York without some serious shine. Magnificent evening and occasion wear from the usual suspects - Oscar de la Renta (burgeoning ballgowns), Marchesa (Great Gatsby inspired sparkly fringed excellence), etc - but my highlights - literally - shone through.

5. Prints In
From iridescent brocade to check and lace to retro, the devils in the detail. The two most frequent trends I noticed were variations on check and tweed (as seen at Novis, Kate Spade and Lela Rose, amongst others), and animal print (as seen at Christian Siriano, 3.1. Phillip Lim and Proenza Schouler).

Highlights
Personal favourites?
I've gone prep, it seems. Michael Kors - gorgeously classic. J Crew for it's consistent perfection. Tommy Hilfiger for its sporting (in both senses) prowess.

A sneaking up-on-you trend?
Peplum hems. They're hinted at here and there in line with the ladylike looks championed this season, most notably at Altuzarra and CG Chris Gelinas. I'd love to see them return.

On to my favourite city and my own timezone - LFW! Any trends you'd be keen to try from the collections at NYFW? Any personal favourites or thoughts?
