I'm going to be 24 next month, and every birthday I tend to reflect on how I've changed - and more importantly, what I've learned - in the past year. So, in the spirit of this tradition, this is what I know to be true of life... Some are my own, the rest are treasures passed forward.
1. Comparing is the fastest way to unhappiness (to quote Dr. Seuss:'Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.')
2. Cut your hair - it does grow back.
3. Bloom where you're planted.
4. People are like batteries - there are those who charge you and those who drain you.
5. God sometimes removes a person from your life for your own protection. Don't run after them.
6. Know when to be easy on yourself, and when to be hard on yourself.
7. Family will always be there. Your job won't be.
8. It's ok to say no.
9. It's also ok to not know what you want in life and where you're going.
10. Life is what happens when other people are making plans.
11. Figure out what success means to you and stick to it. Don't let other people define it.
12. Put your health first.
13. You have a 50% say in everything that happens to you.
14. Education is free and easy until you reach the age you actually start to value it - after that, it's rarely free and harder to attain.
15. Wear sunscreen!
16. Time is the biggest luxury in the world and you can't buy more. Use it wisely.
17. Celebrate diversity and each other's values. It's ok to believe different things.
18. Let the world turn.
19. Try everything once.
20. What you do with your life is entirely up to you - including whether you become a fuck up or an inspiration to others. Don't blame your past for your present and don't blame other people.
21. Other people cannot tell the difference between faked confidence and being confident. They can tell the difference between faked passion and real passion.
22. Little by little, one travels far.
23. You don't have to be blessed with all of life's riches to have a life worth living.
I'd love to hear your pearls of wisdom too - you can never have too many.
Felicity
